She Said 03:24
She said you haven't seen the last of me I'll always be around but never here She said I always thought the best of you Didn't you believe the words I said Take care the world gets pretty rough and lonely Out there you're on your own And it feels impossible to think about Moving on You know it's all a bitter truth you cannot swallow So don't pretend that you're ok You hear the words but they ring soft and rather hollow And no one cares much anyway She said I drove fifteen hundred miles To see you but you were already gone Why do I always do do things like that She wondered I'd probably do it again

Faces unfamiliar pass me on my way No knock comes on the door Phone don't ring for days and days I don't know this place no more The bars are filled with people I don't know Friends don't come around Nothing looks like nothing I'm a stranger in my hometown And I don't regret a single moment Of things that came before Might change something here or there But not much more The only things for certain Are the thoughts inside my head The closest thing thing I have to memory Is the skin I cannot shed So come to me Change is always right around the corner Much more I cannot say Got a nickel in my pocket For every time change goes away They tore down that old house up the street Put a new one in it's place I really don't need these boots on my feet But I'll keep them just in case

Highway 40 Nashville to Memphis Venus bright in the Western sky Late February gonna see Elvis The sundown passes by A handful of fishermen American wisdom Sit by the riverside Traffic buzzes fingers freeze Pulled down by the tide Is the spot where you last stood Are these the things you saw Was music swimming in your lungs Was this your fatal flaw Is this the spot where you believed Everything was real And if I stand here long enough Is this what I should feel More forgotten less remembered Days and days and days before Can't go backwards forwards broken And I'm shaken to the core Is the spot where you last stood Are these the things you saw Was music swimming in your lungs Was this your fatal flaw Is this the spot where you believed Everything was real And if I stand here long enough Is this what I should feel What began as a performance backfired into something more I don't blame her she's a ghost now And years went by seas ran dry And i'm standing on your shore Swirling waters Tennessee sky This much day gets in your eyes Graceful music Dancing heart It all takes you by surprise Is the spot where you last stood Are these the things you saw Was music swimming in your lungs Was this your fatal flaw Is this the spot where you believed Everything was real And if I stand here long enough Is this what I should feel

I'm just killing time in Austin I can't spend another minute in this town In an hour or two I'll be flyin' to you but until then I'm just kinda hangin' 'round Well it ain't no fun In the heat and the sun And nobody remembers the last time they saw rain The stars at night aren't big or bright And just last night I saw a real bar fight And my head and heart are arguing about which one feels more pain I'm just killing time in Austin I can't spend another minute in this town In an hour or two I'll be flyin' to you but until then I'm just kinda hangin' 'round Well my friends all said I'd love it down in Austin They said, son this town is just right for you Well the girls are pretty and the music's fine And it sure is cool to see the bats go flyin' But something about this town just leaves me blue And it's ok Not everywhere's for everybody Hey, you can only be just where you are And I know I love to wander all around this world But something about the Northeast calls me home Well I'm bettin' I could fall in love in Texas And I'm sure my heart could break here Just like it's done before Standing by the river on a cool dark night I guess this place feels alright But I've packed my bags and I'm heading for the door And it's ok Not everywhere's for everybody Hey, you can only be just where you are And I know I love to wander all around this world But somehow about the Northeast calls me home I'm just killing time in Austin I can't spend another minute in this town In an hour or two I'll be flyin' to you but until then I'm just kinda hangin' 'round

about

The Flying River is my fifth album. Until about a year ago, most of the songs on it existed only as home demos that I wasn't sure what to do with. Two things happened in early spring of 2019 that sparked the beginning of this new album.

The first was an article I read over morning coffee one day in my Brooklyn apartment about an ecological phenomenon called a flying river. It is how scientists refer to the mass of water vapor always present above the Amazon rainforest. This idea inspired the title track.

The second was meeting, by chance, musician and songwriter Adam Lindquist. Inspired by his work, I asked if he might be interested in producing a couple of tracks with me. We worked together to create "She Said" and the title track. Working with Adam was the breath of fresh air needed to go back to work further on those home demos.

The final piece of the puzzle in bringing together the full album was traveling to Vermont in the summer of 2019 to record an old song of mine called "Killing Time In Austin". Written almost 10 years ago, the song has been a popular mainstay of live performances, but did not exist anywhere in recorded form. I knew I wanted a vibe for this song that had to include my dear friend Ted Looby, who had played guitar on several songs on my album Circles. In Burlington, VT, I could work with Ted and record with producer/engineer Gus Ziesing at Low Tech Studios overlooking Lake Champlain. We laid down tracks which I would bring back to Brooklyn to finish, which included adding the beautiful vocal harmonies of Clare Byrne and Amy Larimer. Working again with Adam on production, the song came together.

As I began to look at the 9 songs I was considering for the full album, a story started to emerge as a thread between them, one of determination, hope and survival. I dusted off an old rough recording I'd done of a Flatt And Scruggs song called "Before I met You". This felt like the perfect ending for the album and that was that.

The making of this album follows a rough stretch in late 2018 which saw the passing of my dad and my dog within months of each other. They are both in the songs of this album.

I hope you enjoy it and find something to connect to. Thank you to everyone who contributed to it.

-Dan
